Since human beings have been walking up right our spine, neck, and back have worked in harmony to keep us that way. Over the past couple of decades, however, the smartphone has revolutionized the way that we walk and hold our heads.

Research shows that the average person spends up to 4 hours a day looking at their phone with their heads bent forward and their eyes straining to see the text messages and emails on their phones.

Are these unnatural neck positions bad for our backs? The answer is a resounding yes.

The average head and brain weigh around 12 pounds in its natural position-straight up not bent. The further we turn our heads and necks, the more they weigh. According to chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, our heads exert upwards of 60 pounds of pressure when we move our necks to look at text messages. The earth’s gravitational force causes that difference.

All of this pressure and weight bends our cervical spine in ways it ought not to. The results of all this bending and moving? Wear and tear on the spine that can lead to degeneration and possibly even surgery is the result of this behavior, according to Dr. Hansraj’s research.

Interestingly, even seemingly insignificant angles like 15 to 30 degrees of head tilt can exert a serious amount of pressure on the spine. Maintaining this position on a consistent basis can cause pain that may eventually require surgery and rehabilitation.

However, proper alignment will reduce the stress and pressure put on your neck and back. It can also increase your overall emotional and physical well-being, according to research. The poorer your posture is the worse off you will be all the way around. Alternatively, proper posture can keep you feeling and looking your best.

A simple trick to avoid bad texting posture is to become more aware of your body. Make adjustments when necessary, and try not to spend hours looking down at your phone.

You’ll be better off for it!
