The President of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), Anthony Hamm, released a powerful statement regarding the National Center of Complementary and Integrative Health’s (NCCIH) 2012 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).
The study found that the majority of American adults experience some level of pain whether brief or chronic, ranging from minor to severe.
“The American Chiropractic Association is encouraged that NCCIH’s research priorities include the study of complementary approaches to pain management, including chiropractic services. Integrated approaches can offer patients a higher degree of safety and help address opioid overuse and abuse in the United States by reducing the need for prescription pain medications.”
Hamm went on to state how NCCIH’s analysis showed that chiropractic services are one of the more popular alternatives to pain medications, with roughly 19 million patients receiving spinal manipulation over the last year alone.
ACA is also excited about new research becoming known regarding the effectiveness of conservative forms of care for pain management, as it lends itself to improved health and quality of life.
As evidence mounts to support chiropractic care as an alternative pain management treatment, more Americans and doctors will turn towards it for relief. This new report points pain sufferers in a different direction, one that could possibly change the way pain is treated altogether.
This new report from NCCIH comes after ACA’s announcement that the National Chiropractic Health Month (NCM) in October will begin to bring more focus on the health crisis causing American’s severe pain and over use of prescription painkillers.
This year’s theme for the event is #PainFreeNation. Educating the public regarding the nearly exhaustive list of alternative pain management options is the first step towards eliminating or reducing the overuse of prescription painkillers and surgery.
